I agree with everyone who has said. "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it's mistakes." However, there is a lot to think about here.

First of all, what does "preserving the past" refer to? If we are talking about antiquated buildings with no true historical value, only sentimental value, then perhaps it would be good to do away with them if a building with an important purpose, better built and energy efficient could replace it. Or if perhaps that antiquated building could be replaced with a park.

And then again, it could refer to antiquated practices in medicine for example. I certainly would rather have modern surgery than being cut open with a knife that just cut up a cow with no more anesthesia than what can be had in a bottle of whiskey!

Or for that matter, it can refer to outmoded ideas, say, like sacrifice of human beings. Or the old fashioned idea of "an eye for an eye."

And what does the future hold? An elimination of cancer? A more eco-friendly way to live? A better standard of living?

OF course, if it means eradicating all memory, then well, how can you have a future? There would be only now because you would have to learn everything all over again, every single day.

Without the past there can be no future! Everything that was has been, everything that is will be, and everything that will be, will be. The point of not preserving the past is flawed logic, it's defeatism at it's worst. That's assuming the past had/has no value and that things will be better in the future. If you don't know the past you cannot say what the future will hold. If you keep making the same mistakes you'll never be successful in the future. And when you make a mistake you'll forget it and look to the future. You will be caught in a vicious cycle.

If this question means the past in our minds then:

- by dwelling in the past we lose sight of the future and the present and
- how do we learn from things that have happened. If someone uses you, you learn to avoid it happening in the future. But on the other hand you could think someone has used me I wont trust anyone again

There isnt a right or wrong answer to this. Interpret it and evaluate it as you see it and come to a conlucsion (the hardest bit do)

I very much disagree with the statement. Firstly we cannot preserve the past even if we want to. What we can do, and should do, is learn from the past so we don't have to make the same mistakes again. The best predictor of the future is what happened in the past. So it behooves us to know what happened and take steps to correct what we can.

To further the thesis; consider the sterling example of the Iconoclasts, the Red Guards, Pol Pot, Urban Renewal, onward to the perfected future of the modern men.

There is no point in preserving your essay. You should look toward life without a high-school diploma

The past is your history which is very important. It's where you came from and about your ancestors. Your future is now and what's ahead; that you can be a part of in writing. All of it is very important.

the future builds upon the past. if there is no past then there is no future. to make the future brighter you need to be able to understand where you came from to keep sight of where you're going.
