I don't know when it originally started, but in some countries like countries in South Asia, shaking hands with your left hand is considered disrespectful. In some countries like Iraq, men are known to do certain cleansing with their left hand which is why they will extend their right hand. For them, it is also a sign of respect.

all are close, but no dice... the Right hand is used because the left hand is seen as dirty. This comes from the middle ages when availability of toiletries had not come so much into being. So the one hand was designated for the wiping of the posterior and the other for all other business. The right hand was seen as the proper hand and the left as the dirty. To offer someone your left hand in a shake or in holding something out was to infer disgrace and disrespect to the receiver.

the raising of the hand in the gesture "Hello" or "Hi" is the origin of the gesture of showing no pistol in the hand... origins from the days of the settlers...

I believe that it could be to do with weapons, the act of shaking hands, the hands are open showing nothing concealed, or perhaps you would draw your sword/gun with your right hand

The right hand was offered to show that it held no weapon and that the person came in peace. (Unless, of course, he was left-handed and the right hand was merely a sneaky diversion.)

Because the majority of people are right-handed, therefore, it only makes sense.

The right hand is the weapons hand, and the gesture shows that you are not wielding one.
