Origin: This famous saying was first used by writers in the mid-1600s and popularized by a Canadian humorist Thomas Haliburton around 1836. The idea behind it is that if milk spills out of a container, you can't get it back in again, so you might as well not cry over it. Note: Sometimes you'll see "spilled" spelled as "spilt." That is because it is an old idiom and "spilt" is an old spelling.

No they aren't lying. Obviously lots of things aren't particularly "cool" but it doesn't mean it's not okay. Everyone gets sad and by not crying when you're really upset and feel like you need to cry, can make things worse and that can be unhealthy.

I've always heard it as---- There's no use crying over spilled milk. I have always thought it to mean basically what's done is done, you can't go back and fix something just move ahead.

Don`t cry, or worry over something that is in the past and that there is no way to riight the wrong. ( Did you ever attempt to put milk back in the bucket after you spilled it in the milk barn?)

It's like when a baby spills its milk.
It can't cry because the mother will hit it.
I think the saying means don't be a crybaby or you'll get hurt.

pretty much that accidents happen and are unpredictable. That 'crying over spilled milk' won't help once it has happened and that its pointless to react as such over a mistake/accident.

Spilled milk is useless and undrinkable. There's nothing you can do to make it drinkable, so there's no point in being upset about it.
