I've run two different virus scanners and the windows folder still comes up when I sign on to my account. I am not sure what to do once I am in the system configuration menu looking at the processes there. For a PC running on windows XP, what should I be seeing? I think at least one startup item is a data miner, but that wouldn't cause the windows folder to open at startup, would it? It's "spdadmin" and it also has a command that shows up as a system32 file with the same title that has something about "hide" in the file name. There is also something with nothing in the startup item area and c:\windows\\\\\\\\\ in the command area. What are these? Could they be what's causing my PC to go bonkers? Somebody help; I'm about at my wit's end with this!

"There is also something with nothing in the startup item area and c:\windows\\\\\\\\\ in the command area" - remove that thing. That should work.

I haven't heard you say what the bad behavior is. You said you know that one of the processes is a data miner but how? What makes you think that something is wrong?

If you really do have some trojan horse or malware of some kind, then you're not going to be able to go in and kill the process or delete the file by yourself anyway. If you have real reason to suspect that you have some kind of malware infestation, then there's no shortcut but to follow the somewhat arduous process laid out by the guys over at MajorGeeks:

Malware is tricky, and this is a pretty rock solid set of steps. Plus, if you follow them and it doesn't work, you can post your results to the guys at majorgeeks and they will give you free support. These are serious PC nerds who know what they're doing.

Data miner usually clog your system and make it run slower.

What i would do is click on START , place cursor over ALL PROGRAMS (lower left), then click on PC HELP AND TOOLS, then click on HP PC SYSTEM RECOVERY.to do a complete recovery. What that will do is reformat your computer and set it to the factory settings. You have to watch it cuz they have the one where it will erase the data, but leave your programs in place.

I would do the complete recovery and start all over again and reformat. Then when you FINALLY get it done. Load up your antivirus programs first, then load up your programs to get on the internet. Then download the Windows XP updates.

Anymore problems get back to me.

I really don't believe it has anything to do with a virus, more with some random setting somewhere.
