The object has made its way into the "trap" of the toilet. This is where water stays, to prevent sewer gas (methane gas) from coming into your house. If the object turns sideways, it will lodge itself inside the toilet, and it creates a dam, that catches other items and stops up your toilet. I suggest, that you look inside the tank of the toilet, and find the manufacture date, stamped into the back wall. If the toilet is over 10 years old, replace the toilet, with a new 1.6 gallon per flush toilet. Not only will you eliminate the stoppage, but you will save money, by using less water. A toilet is a fairly simple install, for anyone with some moderate handyman skills. After that, post a sign next to the toilet that reads " NOT A TRASH CAN, FOR HUMAN WASTE ONLY!" It will generate some discussion, when others use your facilities! Good luck to you!

The answer above about the trap is correct, but before taking the toilet apart, I would recommend getting a grabber from Home Depot. It looks like a snake, but has a plunger on the end that when depressed opens up 3 wire finger-like grabbers. If you are lucky, you'll be able to fish around and Grab the item and pull it out without replacing half your toilet. (You can always go that route later)
These things are amazingly handy for sink traps and items lost in vents, or other hard to reach places.
Good luck!

you can take it off the floor it will make a water mess so have towels handy. also you will need a new wax ring for the bottom, and if they are rusted or really old you may as well get new bolts to bolt it back down to the floor. then probably re-caulk where the toilet meets the floor, but leave the back uncaulked, it will give the water somewhere to go if it ever leaks and will warn you of the problem, if you dont it will stay in the floor causing more damage before you realize it is leaking.

You are going to have to pull the toilet. Shut off the valve, flush the toilet, use a sponge or towel to absorb any water remaining. Loosen the nuts on the floor bolts(if they are old and rusted you may have to cut them off with a hacksaw and replace them). Lift the toilet up completely and place it on its' side on a towel. Use a dry vac to suck the trapped item out of the pathway. Remove all of the old wax seal and install a new one. Secure the toilet with new or existing bolts and nuts. Turn the water back on and check for leaks at the base of the toilet when you flush. Good luck.....it's a pain in the a$$.

Buy a wax toilet seal at the hardware store (they are cheap insurance...fits like a gasket between the floor pipe and the comode)
turn off the water supply, flush empty, drain off any extra water, have towels or mop available for extra water.
try to manually release the object...if no luck ...loosen the screws on the floor of the toilet and carefully remove comode. you should be able to reach from the other side now.
replace the wax seal (better safe than sorry (theyr'e cheap). Screw the comode back down. turn on your water. check for leaks around seal. if no leaks your back in business.
good luck.
if your nervous, go to lowes and talk to the guys there...they know stuff too.

Toilet Augar Or Toilet Snake you can rent one, if that dosn't work then you'll have to pull the toilet. But if that thing is in the toilet the augar should work. Try that first because it's better than pulling it up...
GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN..........
