what is the computer doing when the word buffering appears?: is it looking for the clip loading it what?:

The computer is downloading some of the video before it begins to show it. This allows you to watch the video that's been buffered while the rest downloads without the video being interrupted.

The word buffering is when the computer is waiting for the website to send the bits of data. Generally, the faster your connection, the less you see this "buffering".
Sadly, if you have dial-up you will see this buffering phenomenon a lot.
The other part of this equation is the server that you are accessing. If its capability is slower than yours is, that is the hold-up on buffering.
Once you have downloaded a clip onto your computer, you will notice that the buffering no longer appears because it is loaded onto your hard drive, or if it isn't saved, it is in your RAM and internet cache.

Yes its because the player loads the content to RAM in other words it is called "buffering" in programming terms. This is for fast playing, otherwise you'll have to wait for the data to come thru the network. Buffering loads a number of frames into memory and then plays it. Though you see the message only once on screen, the process continues as you watch the movie. This is how video streaming thru internet becomes possible.
