Yes! Although, to be fair, I doubt Paine could have envisioned the society we live in today. Still, he was in a position to know what civil unrest due to poor/oppressive government could do to a country, none better. By all accounts, the Terror made the American Revolution look positively congenial.

While the requirements of modern government mean more government involvement due to the breadth and intricacies of today's society, limiting its scope is still of paramount importance. His statement is as true now as it was then.

I tend to agree with that statement, but I think you have to define governing. If you define governing as public officials performing their duties, then there is no such thing as over governing. If you define governing as the micromanagement of civilian lives, then vary little governing is excessive.

Yeah look at America today. Bush is trying to rule the U.S. and not be its president. All hail king Georgie Bush. My personal opinion Bush is forcing his morals and ideals upon the citizens of America. do i agree with them? no but i sit and wait patiently for the next election to come up because he cant run ever again and that just makes me a happy person.
