First, how kind of you to think of this question.... heart - touching.
I like the other suggestion about the roses - LOL... sweet, but watch the thorns around the baby.
To be honest, for me, it was silky but "real" pajamas... comfortable, easy access (buttons) down the front for nursing, something I could wear when I got home and none of my clothes fit anymore, I hurt, and still wanted to be "a woman" - silkies helped there.
Also, a camera /video camera and film,
one of those cheesy "It's a boy / It's a girl" banners for the baby's door...
sweet smelling bubble bath - the first bath home is second to heaven... after being so filthy from delivery, taking showers in hospital...
then, just hold her hand, tell her how beautiful she and the baby are and stand there and live the moment... there is none so beautiful or everlasting. Congratulations.

First of all, please arrange to have a family member or neighbor to hang a bow (either blue or pink) on your front door so that she will see it when you gt home! Sounds corny, but every mother I know was so impressed when they got home and this was there! It's like announcing to the world that the baby is here and she did it!
Secondly, it depends on your wife. I will give you some suggestions that friends/family of mine have done for their child and their wife.
My nephew was born 3 months early, so he couldn't come home when my sister did, so my brother in law asked me to have TONS of his pictures printed and framed and placed in every square inch of the house, so when she was at home and not at the hospital visiting, everywhere she looked she could see him. He also had a silver baby shoe charm put on a chain, that he gave her from him and the baby! And for my nephew he had a 14c gold wrench engraved with his name, dob, and weight and a little message about coming so early! (My B-I-L is all into working with toools and stuff, so it was SO fitting!)
Another idea: A friend of ours had a birthstone ring made with his stone, his wifes stone and the babys stone put in it, and since they were planning on one more baby, he had a diamond put in the blank space, until the next baby came! And since his family owns and runs a meat market and deli since 4 generations ago, he had a onesie made with the stores logo put on it, and an apron that each man in the family wears at the market.
Another friend started a charm bracelet for his wife, and had a special charm made for her with the birthstone of the baby on it. And he is a big duck hunter so he bought the baby duck call out of cabelas and they come in blue or pink and engrave the name, dob, weight, height, etc on it!
I would definately say, have someone take an awesome picture of the three of you in the hospital and without your wife knowing, have someone go blow up the pic and frame it, so you already have a family picture at your house! Do sentimental things that mean something to her! This is a VERY emotional time, so thoughtful things mean so much more than the amount of money that it cost!
Congrats to you, your wife and the new baby!

First off, Congratulations Daddy!
Honestly, after having 4 kids, I think the best gift you could give y our wife is LOTS of help when she gets home. Taking care of a newborn is very exhausting and scary for first time mommies.
Hire her a housekeeper or cleaning service for the fist month.
If you can afford to do this, she will love you for it. Why?
She can focus all her energies on just the baby and getting back to feeling normal.
I think she would appreciate this the most.

Some people get jewelry because it lasts for a memory. I think if I was coming home from the hospital I would like a few nice pillows and a big warm comforter that the whole family could snuggle under together. In a color that I love. Congratulations!

This is really sweet of you to think of this. My husband bought me a gold necklace with a girl/boy child with a little diamond in it. You can get them from the jewler or have it special made. You can also get the baby and wife matching mother daughter gold bracelets. Congratulations on your new baby!

Wow that is incredibly sweet and your wife would LOVE it if she knew you were on here asking! Anyway, if you aren't opposed to material gifts then maybe a piece of jewelry with the baby's birth stone in it? Or if you want something a little more low key, then a beautiful card with some heartfelt words of thanks and congratulations would mean the world.

A SIMPLE NECKLACE OR ANKLE BRACLET WOULD BE GOOD. AS A MOM OF 2 i DISAGREE /W/ THE WHOLE- MAID,HOUSE CLEANER, ETC- NOT FOR NOTHING BOTH OF MY KIDS WERE C-SECTIONS AND I MANAGED TO COME HOME AND KEEP HOUSE ETC- MAYBE NOT AS WELL AS THE WEEK BEFORE BUT EVENTUALLY IT WAS ALL DONE. SHE'D BE MORE UNCOMFORTABLE CLEANING LIKE CRAZY BEFORE THE CLEANING LADY CAME. KNOW WHAT I MEAN. SHE AND YOU WILL NEED TO LEARN HOW CLEAN HOUSE W/ A KID IN IT- BOTTOM LINE., WE ALL DO IT YOU'D BE BETTER TO SAVE THAT 200-300 FROM THE MAID AND USE IT TOWARD A FAMILY PORTRAIT IN ABOUT A MONTH OR SO.
CONGRATULATONS

A maid for the first few weeks of your childs life. Someone to help with the cooking and cleaning around the house. You can look in yellow pages or ask around.
