This is a guess, because I think I'd have to see your math book (or your class notes) to know for sure. Try this - take two pennies and eight pennies (those would be the counters) and make a big pile of them. Then split them into two equal piles. The number in each pile would be the average of 2 and 8.

Again, and I can't emphasize this enough - this is just a guess. Read your book and/or your notes for a possibly more accurate answer.

Counters are another word for your fingers. Just add 2 plus 8 and then divide the answer by 2/there's the average!

Counters are small pieces that you can count out for visual purposes. For example pennies or paper clips.
