I was always told that it was not good for babys to have cereal till they are 4 to 6 months, the longer you wait the better.I started my daughter when she was 6 months and she didnt really want it so i waited a few weeks then she took it,she is now 9 months and loves everything we give her!I am new to this yahoo stuff, but i did want to point somenthing out after reading some of these things, the 2 people above me seem to have a different opinion on this which i think is good, but the OU812 person looks like a real mean person so if i could i would put out a vote to babypear.Thumbs up to you baby i like your answer the best so far!!

NO NO NO!! At one month old your babys tummy is not ready for cereal. The docs say not until almost 6 mos i believe. I always gave cereal to my kids at around 4 mos. I only used the spoon method. I dont think putting cereal in a bottle is the right way to feed a baby. In my opinion i think its laziness. My sister in law does it and it frustrates me that she wont take the time to sit and feed her baby. When your baby will accept the food with a spoon and i mean she doesnt spit it out then that means shes ready. Believe me you dont wanna rush these things. Good luck

Yes, it is FINE to put cereal in the bottle. You just need to monitor how much. If it was not okay, then someone should contact Enafil, as they make an added rice cereal (starch) and every bottle company makes y cut nipples for "thicker" formula.
Babypear and others are giving you what the "guidlines" suggest (and apparently calling out people in a thread? Shame on you. Not nice is it?) And maybe there babies are like the general average, but MOST babies are not. Every one is different. It depends on your babies needs. Most people who say you can't are only giving opinions. If it harms your baby, why would doctors INSIST you put rice in cereal if your baby would have GERD (as all three of my nieces and nephew did)
All in all, it is up to you. It is NOT going to harm your child. This will long be a debate, but check with your doc. It's up to you and him.

I asked my dr. about this (he's the chief of staff at our hospital) because grandmas and great-aunts had been telling me that would help my daughter sleep through the night. His answer?

"No! Don't!"

Babies' tummies just aren't ready for cereal, even blah, plain rice. They may develop stomach cramps, bloating, constipation, and other digestive problems that will just make things far more difficult for both you and them.

Cereals are recommended to start @ about 5 months, or whenever you feel your child is ready.

If you don't think your baby is getting enough to eat, my suggestion would be to feed her more. I know that sounds silly and simplistic, but it's probably your best solution. If your baby is having trouble sleeping through the night, you might just have to wait it out -- lots of babies are still waking up to be fed at 6 months old! (I know -- that would suck.) :) Particularly if your baby is breastfed, food won't stick around in her tummy for long, and babies burn a lot of calories simply by growing. I'd hang in there, and wait until she was older.

I would say it depends on how much she weighs and how much you think she needs it. My second daughter was ten pounds at birth, so at one month my doctor told me I could give her a little cereal in her bottle. No problems, no reactions and she has no allergies today(she's three). If you do decide to do it, add only a little bit to the bottle. It takes a while for them to get used to swallowing it. By the way, my daughter was eating about 6-8 ounces every four hours, so she was hungry. If she's eating and seems to be begging for more, you might want to ask your doctor about starting her.

My daughter had 1 tsp cereal per ounce of formula in her bottle since birth, due to reflux. She did fine with it. She outgrew the reflux by 6 mos of age - she is now 9 and still doing fine. Hope this helps. Yet, if I were you, I would check with the baby's doctor to make sure it is OK to put cereal in your baby's bottle

um, NO! cereal should be fed from a spoon - if she's not old enough to take it from a spoon, she's not old enough for it. Feeding cereal does not ensure they will sleep through the night (if that's what you're trying to do).... only when they're 17 pounds are they even physiologically capable of sleeping longer than 5 hours at a time.

You really should check out at least one parenting book. I recommend any book by Dr. Sears (and his RN wife Martha Sears). "The Baby Book" is my favorite.

Never put cereal in a bottle not good at all. It stops them from learning to eat from a spoon. At one month, they just need breast or formula thats it. Don't rush to feed them cereal, you will ruin their stomach and digestive system.

Not really. Their stomachs are still getting used to having food. Wait until the baby is 3 months or a good weight size. But check with your doctor to see what they think your baby is ready for.

technically of course, but don't do it as this negates the whole purpose of learning to feed by spoon......

if you're looking to fill baby up perhaps for a good night's sleep, just try small amounts of cereal by spoon...it may be more messy, but less chances of choking or rejecting being spoonfed later....
