I think its ok, personally , I've used " Sorry, Bob, I cant cover your shift because I'll be screwing your wife while your at work that day." ,"I'd love to help you but Im having a polynastic cyst removed" (works especially well because it sounds real) and of course there is my all time favorite "I cant because I have to get my chemotherapy."(with this last one wait until the pour out sympathy too you then slap them in the head, say you are kidding and tell them they would make a great hooker if they are into a55play)
I think that these excuses at the very least would keep that person for asking you to do the job they are getting paid to do.

Hamster is a bit lame but the ones that people use on me all the time is that they have to take their mother or grandmother to the hospital - makes it more important

I prefer...uggghhh I have food poisoning and can't leave the house. It's a great excuse because no one wants all the ugly details and the recovery time is quick, so you can come in and work the next day.
Of course, you have to pray that no one runs into you on the street and tells the person you lied to.

If they are calling I suggest caller ID and an answering machine to screen calls.
If it is in person and you have a spouse/child say I have to check the family's schedule, then get back to them and say it conflicts (babysitting, doc.apt. etc)
You have to take a sick parent to the doc. or to visit your grandparents, you promised and can't get out of it
Dog/cat is getting fixed
your getting fixed
Spouse is on a bender
getting a dental cleaning and will have to wait months for another apt.
getting a wart removed from your foot
got lots of them but remember if you don't work, pay back is a b!t(h. I always worked when I could money is money

Sorry I can't cover for you because I have a more important reason not to go to work at that time than you.

Just tell them you think you might have the flu and you don't want to infect anyone.
Or...your sister's car broke down 300 miles away and you are their only transpo.

Thanks but no thanks. I wouldn't do for you something that I know you wouldn't do for me. We all have our own lives and shouldn't expect that our coworkers should give up their off day when we probably wouldn't or couldn't...Most likely I probably would cover for them but would be very disappointed when they wouldn't cover for me!!!!!!! There is no good excuse...

That's cool!!
But hey, my colleague ever used: "Sorry, but i need to attend my dog cremation later this afternoon."
I thought she was trying to pull my leg, indeed it was cremated.

Say, "I could, but it would make me so angry that I am not sure that I wouldn't hurt you the next time I saw you."
