One could argue that Oprah chose to do the exclusive interview to forstall a media feeding frenzy that would have decended upon the family otherwise.
She agreed to clearly defined rules of what could and could not be asked, and did not press any points. Other media sources would not have been so kind.

Well, it definitely was not for ratings...she doesn't need it. Nor does she need publicity. She has a following. With her sexual predator shows/and the people that watch--her show was able to catch a few of them. That's pretty darn good.
With that said, Oprah is a busy lady. She has an extensive staff that seeks out these interviews, sets the ground work...ec. She also has lawyers. And I am sure they covered every ground with any medical professionals. Paperwork was most definitely signed. The points of the interview were clear. She respected their wishes and did not cross any lines. The one question about being molested was asked OFF camera, but apparently was ok to say on camera. The boy wasn't ripped apart. And she was the only one to ask why he didn't leave--and to say he was terrified, was enough for me. Finally, no one forced the parents or Shawn to come on the show, they simply could have declined. Also, they had been to all sorts of news conferences, Today show, GMA...and wherever else. So, what's the difference? Not to mention there are shows out there--like Bill O'Reilly slicing him up. So, maybe it was the family's way to tell their story. And I think the story where his stepdad/parents felt that the boy was molested came out at the same time.
Besides that, Oprah is against sexual predators. I think the point of the show was awareness. And a story about survival. It's an amazing when they find children alive.

Well, don't they do a practice show before the real one? I thought the guests would know the questions ahead of time. Plus, if these people weren't 'ready' to be in the spotlight, wouldn't they decline to be on the show? Maybe it's therapeutic for them, who knows.
I do agree that it's sort of tasteless to ask a kid if they were molested on TV. That is wrong.

No. She was very careful. Consider it preparation for his court testimony when the defence and the regular media will try to rip him up like Bill O'Reilly did.
