he had his jersey retired for the celtics and he is in very very ELITE COMPANY with Bird,Russell and other celtics but was he worthy of it

He performed well in the clutch in Celtics playoff games. He was even the 1981 NBA Finals MVP. The more championships a team wins, the more numbers you are going to see retired. However, I don't think he should have had it retired. If the Celtics are going to make an exception for him, then nobody should wear Antoine Walker's number 8 anymore and make Paul Pierce the last Celtic to wear number 34.

I am a huge Celtics fan and I think they have gone too far in choosing players to have their number retired. Maxwell was a very good player, who at times played great, but did not do it long enough to be considered an elite player. I hope in the future that teams will have a ring of honor as many NFL teams do where the players names are displayed somewhere around the arena or stadium where home games are played. You have got to figure that some point in the future, retiring numbers will be a thing of the past. If you are a newly drafted player to the Celtics, your options for a number are already not many.

No, I don't think so. He is somewhere in the Hank Finkel / Chris Ford category and neither one of them has their number swinging from the rafters.
