I was given a computer that had LOTS of problems, a 10 year old "know-it-all" thought she would play with the settings, so I of course took it cuz it was free, and got it all up and running, ended up crashing it and buying a windows XP OS to put on it because it had windows 98 and I got it all running and now all of a sudden they want it back, so I am going to charge them for me fixing it. What should I charge them for this?

I have only had it for about 2 weeks so I haven't even really been able to use it, I just got an ethernet card into it so it hasn't even been on the net yet.

The cost of the OS. It doesnt take much effort to reload an operating system. Maybe the cost of XP + $50.

Tell them to pound sand. OK, if you want to be nice- Charge them what you put into it parts and maybe a little for your time. Or put 98 back on hers and put the XP you paid good money for on a newer system. what ever you do, don't hand over the OS you just paid for without getting what you have in it.

If windows xp hasn't been registered yet with Microsoft, offer to sell it to them at the original purchase price. If they don't want to pay then format the hard drive (which erases everything) and keep the disk for another computer. If the version which is loaded into the hard drive ever gets registered on that computer it cannot be used on another computer .

It would be fair to charge $50 an hour for the time you spent installing the OS and other components as well as the costs associated with the OS.

I would charge for the XP OS as well as my time to set it all up.
Since I consult for a living, it is $100 an hour for hardware, and $200 an hour for software.

Fair market price would be the cost of the Windows XP license you put on it, plus 2 hours of bench time, which would put it at about $280 depending on what area you live in. Unless it's XP Pro you installed, which is usually another hundred in licensing.

Who says that you have to give it back. Tell them that it was given to you, you fixed and improved it, and you have no intentions on giving it back. So deal with it.
It is sad that these people are trying to get a newly upgraded computer at your expense, Why in the world would you let them get away with that. Plus their idiot child is just gonna wreck it again.
Good Luck!

I woudn't charge them a thing. Take off XP and put it back into the same state it was when it was given to you. Charging would be insulting in my opinion. Good luck

Unless they are really, really, good friends...I would say keep it. After all, they gave it to you because it didn't work. Be like they gave you a dead plant, and you watered it, gave it some nutrients, and brought it back to life...so then they want it back? Tell them no way or $150 for your trouble.

If they gave it to you, why are you even considering giving it back to them?
If you are going to sell it back to them, I'd say about $300....time/energy in project/cost of OS....backstabbing you....
still on friendly terms with them? You may not be after you tell them they will have to pay to get it back....
