I bought one when they went on sale for a few hundred dollars last spring. I got all the wiring in (transfer switch etc) but have never had an opportunity to use it. I think if I put in gas and oil and didn't need to run it then the engine would gum up and not work when I did need it. I was also worried about the fact that you need to keep it out of the rain (which unfortunately usually occurs at the same time as the power outages). We had the power out during one storm for a couple of hours and by the time I was convinced it was really needed the power came back.

It gives a feeling of comfort for a low price but is not as handy as you might think (at least in suburbs).

Are you asking for brand preferences? There are many decent manufacturers.

I live in Central Florida, and wish I owned a store that sold nothing but storm stuff.

I bought a Honda generator in 2002. It's 2400 watts. It has a 2 gallon gas tank which has lasted me 8 hours at least, 4 receptacles, and has created enough JUICE to run a refrigerator, all the plug in lights in a 2000 sq. ft. home, a TV, small appliances like coffee maker, etc. and was able to handle a power strip adding more recetacles to the 4.
