I have a gorgeous cockatiel and he's only in his cage to sleep and while I'm out of the house. If I'm away overnight he gets taken to my Mother's house. He's otherwise free to roam around the house at his leisure. I sometimes feel guilty about having him in a cage, but naturally, he needs the safety and security of a cage to sleep and eat in, but I make sure to give him lots of freedom and variety. Not just with birds, but with any kind of pet, why do some people not put the effort into treating them with the same respect and love that they would their own child. There are so many neglected animals in this world. If you can't look after a pet or can't afford to look after them properly, why get one? I don't get it. Why would you have a bird (or any other pet) in a cage just to look at? They should be part of your family and are a great source of enjoyment. Not just caged or tied up somewhere. What an awful life. Why do you think some people are like this?

You know this is not the first time I have ever thought about this. Most people see a pet as just a cute little thing that they can simply have to show off. But then they realize they don't want to put in the effort. It is sad but the truth... but people are irresponsible. Yet, another thing that I often wonder about is what are the people selling these animals thinking when they sell them to people that clearly cannot take care of the pet. But this is the world that we live in and complaining about this will not change the facts of life.

It is a status symbol- so they can say I have a ____. Something pretty to look at for guests, and then they dump them when the bird starts plucking from boredom.
I see that all the time with horses- people buy a pretty horse (or several) and they have to sit in a stall and rot because the owner does not want them to be turned out (might slip, get cold, wet, pull a muscle, fade in color etc). The beautiful horse turns nuts or doesn't understand why you take all other horses out but it.
Something that can go wrong with cockatiels always outside the cage- I recently got a male cockatiel from a breeder who had a previous owner for 2 yrs before she returned him. Casper started out hand tame and then the 1st owner thought it would be a bad idea to cage him so he was outside of his cage all day long and given free reign of the house. When he started attacking her when it was time to go in the cage, she returned him to the breeder. I bought him and it has been 4 months and he finally doesn't draw blood when he bites me, though I still can't move him unless he understands why and where he is going. My cockatiels get at least 3 hrs a day out of the cage, but love it so much they usually crawl back in-unless I have some soup they can fly into!

Well, sometimes people think they are cool with alot of pets. Some like animals alot, but just don't know HOW to care for them. Others just get tired of the pet, but are too lazy to give it to a good home with loving people, so they keep it cooped up in a cage/garage/on a chain and who knows what else. Sadly, the animal is usually suffering from this whether its lack of attention which can cause depression to no food or water.

I don't understand it either. I just read in the paper today that someone turned in a man who had hundreds of sheep laying around dead.
They said they found stacks of dead sheep that looked like an animal version of the pictures of the jews in the holocaust. Some were still alive, but starving to death.
They had no water and no food. The jerk said he couldn't afford to feed them anymore. So, why didn't he sell them or give them away, not just let them starve to death. They had no water, volunteers went and chopped up ice in a pond so that they could have water to drink.
Why would someone do this? It makes no sense in the world. We've had a horse for 2 months now that is eating good and gaining weight, plus getting lots of love. She was given to us because someone was going to turn the owner in for starving her. You could see all her ribs. It was terrible.
I understand not having the money to feed an animal, but hey get rid of it. Sell it if you can or give it away. What do you gain by starving it to death? More people ought to be charged with animal cruelty. I don't understand how people can treat animals the way they do.

Because they are irresponsible and they buy according to their emotions instead of their head. I'm so glad you addressed this because it does definitely need to be addressed. I can't believe when they don't even wash out the water bowls and they get all slimy and are breeding grounds for germs and can make their pets so very sick. Also not taking them to a dentist is the reason they don't live as long. Bad dental hygiene is the largest cause of illness in pets.

because they just see it as a cute pet and nothing more.
i recently aquired two new pets
one was a curly haired dog and he was full of knots but he had an owner but he let us have it cause he didn't want it anymore i had to shave the poor thing.
and the other one was a kitty Kat that i found in a box at a public park.
i always try to pick up stray animals and find them good homes (usually w/ me)
Or those horrible people who just ditch them on the streets and drive off.

Some people are stupid and get animals just for show, like a lawn peice or something and I think that is just wrong to do a living thing like that.

Good question. That angers me too. I think too many people are impulsive about purchasing a pet- they just perceive them as toys.

that's the million dollar question. than there would be no need for foster families for dogs/cats, and i wouldn't be a volunteer.
but other than that, we also have to wonder how humans can abandon their own children too....?
