This was never explained to me what Oklahoma's nickname is. I know there is a boomer sooner, I know they have a stagecoach come out before games, is it like a cowboy, but Oklahoma State called the nickname cowboys?

They were the people who cheated to get to the Oklahoma Territory and stake their claims "sooner" than those who followed the rules. They illegally entered the land rush too early.

Oklahoma is called the Sooner State; the term dates back from a land rush around 1900 or so. Prospective settlers were supposed to line up and go for their favorite parcels at a predetermined time, but a lot of people went sooner. Hence the name.
