The earth is actually a ball of molten magma, or lava, and the continental plates are actually floating on top of this constantly moving against one another and also folding under in some places, Volcano's are like vents letting the heat out in places and are actually either leaking up through the joints in the plates or pushing their way through weak points in the crust,the constant moving of these plates is also the cause of earthquakes that arise when the plates lock together in places and then let go this is most evident in places like California's San Andreas fault were the movement is quite noticeable, if you look up tectonic plates on your PC you will see what i mean
