The first few episodes seem to emphasize the bad singers. I felt a little sorry for the fat kid and the bug-eyed kid. Some of the people were scary though. It's incredible how many people when can't sing at all have convinced themselves that they are "going to be the next American Idol".
I think 2 things are going on. These people literally cannot distinguish one note from another so they cannot tell that they are not singing on pitch. The best analogy I can think of is if your brain interpreted all colors as black. So you look at a bunch of paintings that you are told are good paintings and to you they all look like solid black. Then you get some paint and a canvas and you start painting. No matter what colors you use the picture ends up looking solid black to you (just like the good paintings!) so in your mind you are a good painter. It would of course seem ridiculous to you if someone then told you that your paintings were bad. How could that be? To you they look exactly like the good paintings? Obviously the person critiquing you knows nothing about painting! How dare they judge you!
That's a problem with doing self evaluation on something subjective. For something objective (e.g. shooting free throws) the outside world can tell you that you are not good at something. If you attempt 50 free throws and make 1 you are obviouly not very good at it. But with subjective things you have to rely on someone else's judgment. If you are a terrible singer (or playwrite, or comedian, or dancer, or President of the United States) part of the problem is that you can't distinguish good work from bad. So self-evaluation is meaningless.
The second phenomenon is that these people seem to have miserable lives and have developed this fantasy in their minds where money and fame will come swooping in and make their lives better so (understandably) they are very resistant to hear in no uncertain terms that that is not going to happen.

Yes, many of them seemed to be mentally challenged and I think its a DAMN shame for them to get made fun of like that. It's completely out of line.
Also the judges have been mean and horrible more so than any other season. Just like the secretary who's boss paid for her to go, they were making fun of that saying she's in love with him. I think most people would love to have a boss that understanding and supportive. You don't see that very often.
I am very disappointed with this season so far. I may stop watching.
And Paula needs to go......she is always out of it....who is she to be judging people?

Yep. The Government is testing some kind of in-breeding programme there. Hehehe.
But seriously I think they're probably paid actors or something. At least I hope so.

the people there were wierd. the geek guy who sang the Unchained Melody really creeps me out. then there's the blonde girl with glasses with her mom who looks exactly like her. ang the guy who has unusually large eyes. what's sad about them is, they all think they're singing great. are they deaf? or they don't have any friends to tell them they suck
