It's what causes the seasons

The earth's axial tilt is what produces seasons. During summer earth is tilted towards the sun, so that half of the world (either the northern or southern hemisphere) gets more direct sunlight and also more daylight hours.

Remember that the seasons are reversed from north to south too; when it's summer in London it's winter in Sydney, and vice versa.

There is a much smaller effect produced by the changing distance from the sun. The earth is closest to the sun in early January and farthest in July, so the northern winters and summers are a little bit milder and the southern ones are a little bit more severe than they would be otherwise.
