I have had my ferret for a little over a year now. At first she only took things like pens and keys, but now she is trying to take everything that isnt nailes down. She has tried to take the dvd player, computer, even clothes. When I get the stuff back from her hiding spots she gets upset and does the ferrett war dance. I have checked on the internet and cant seem to find anything that explains why they have this behavior.

It's just their nature. The only difference between them is WHAT they like to steal. This trait is just part of their nature and part of what makes them such an endearing pet and companion. You just have to learn to live with it, put things away and out of reach that you don't want stolen and clean out stashes every so often.

it's just a ferret thing, i really don't know how to explain "why" they do it, but this is where the term "packrat" comes in...... some animals just have this natural behavior (like raccoons, crows, etc...) usually shiny objects are the first to go, but ferrets are just naturally curious animals, & anything they can pick up or drag, is gonna go to their hiding spot... hopefully you know all her hiding places by now...... even things that they cant move they'll get into trouble with (example, digging in potted plants) your best bet is to do whatever you can to keep small objects out of her reach..... keep pens, paper clips, etc. in a drawer or in a desk organizer up high enough where she can't reach, hang keys on a hook on the wall, & pretty much, if she gets into something new, fix each problem as it comes along........... oh, for the love of ferrets!

Mine is not too bad about stealing but I do know what you are talking about. It is just in their nature. They love it and will try to take anything that they can move and hide it from you. I enjoy watching Xylo, my ferret, try to take things (until he takes and hides my keys that I need to go to work the next day).

Ferrets are lovable, friendly, playful little animals. If you keep a single Ferret, it will get lonely. Being very curious, they need attention and lots of toys.

It's natural ferret behavior. It's just what they do.

Maybe she likes your stuff better than hers... have you caught her stealing?
