I don't want any "its up to the listener." I want to know what you actually look for in a song.

complexity. it doesnt have to be catchy or a great listen the first time around, usually if its good the first time, the more you hear it the less you like it. Simple pop songs are fun once, but lack depth and therefore are no longer popular after 6 months cuz everyones already heard it.

A good song is one that has at least one bridge, one that has something different about it, a strange beat or an unusual harmony. music should have a bassline and drumbeat that is not the melody. i like it to have melodic themes, but too many dance songs and pop songs are all beat with vocals. It is the base to the music, it shouldnt be the music. My only other criteria is that the voice of the singer have some passion, the actual sound isnt important as long as you can feel whatever thought or emotion they are trying to convey. Niel young cant really sing, but his music is no less great because he is passionate about it.

Im so tired of lame repeated melody pop music

There is no accounting for taste but it is possible to recognize true talent, even if you don't like a person's music.

I think a good musician is:

Someone who involves the listener emotionally. They start by tapping into themselves, which usually finds either a weird pocket of people who can relate, or "everyman".

Someone who knows HOW to play their instrument, even if they don't read music. I include knowing HOW to sing here.

Someone who is original somehow. A creator, they write their own material and push their own limits, or the limits of their art, or the limits of their instrument

Someone who sets a musical standard for others to follow.

Someone who can't be pigeonholed into a genre.

a good bass line (kind of funky or it really rocks), a nice rhythm( rhythmattic cords) and lead (fast playing lead with some good technique) guitars. Words that we can all relate to and sing along with. Drums that will make you want to dance to.

it's very difficult to define why you like some people's playing, and why you don't like some others'.
I think a person should listen to his/her playing, while playing.
Music playing shows the character of a person. I never like a person with a rough character, playing something. I feel his bad character in his playing.
