There's a couple of ways but I'll give you one way. If you are using a Windows operating system, when the folder is open, you will want to go to the top of the page and click on "View". There you will see the options for changing the view of the folder. It's easy as that.

1. Click 'View' on the menu bar at the top of the window.
2. Select the folder view that you want. (I like details)
3. Now click 'Tools' on the menu bar and select 'Folder options...'.
4. Click the 'View' tab and click the 'Apply to all folders' button.
5. Click 'Yes' to confirm that you would like the current view to be the default for all folders.
6. Click 'Ok'.

After you open the folder, and the icons are on the screen, Click View in the menu above, and in the drop down box, choose list or details, then ok.

the menu bar has a way to choose icons, thumbnails and so on. it looks like a little table at the top. unless you mean the desktop in which case i have no idea whats going on. but if its just a folder window you should find it up on the top or under 'view'.

When you reopen the something it should remain the way when you left it last. I'll check it out now, hold on.
