Trust, Sincerity, Understanding, and Forgiveness are the first four things in my mind that you need to work on in a relationship. The list could be endless but you d need these bare minimum strengths in your relationship (in order to workit out long term).
I say this especially if the relationship is "opposite attarcts"kinds. As, I m sure there are times when you cant comprehend the better half due to this fact. And then the above mentioned things come into play.
I didnt mention good sex as you would see others commenting on it.

well that is not a good sign at all...if your opinions are different on what is important you are in jeopardy of some serious issues. But there is not answer to your question, it always depends on the two people involved...for me its honesty/loyalty, a desire to keep the passion/fun always, and being on the same page as far as family issues (kids, whatnot) go...But lets say you are adamant about having children, and he doesnt want kids...you cant go there...he wants to live in Maui and you like Alaska, wont work...he wants sex all the time, you could go once a month and be good, wont work...etc. etc...

1. Communication, communication, communication!
2. Respect
3. Compromise

In that order. Without these, especially the first one, a marriage will not last.
