The native Florida flora actually being commonly used in horticuture are few but gradually increasing. Some of the best are Coontie Palm, Zamia pumila; Fire Bush, Hamelia patens; Saw Palmetto, Serenoa repens; Sabal Palm, Sabal palmetto; Sweet Bay Magnolia, Magnolia virginiana; Southern Magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora; Spanish Dagger, Yucca aloifolia; Dahoon Holly, Ilex cassine; Yaupon Holly, Ilex vomitoria & its cultivars; Carolina Jessamine, Gelsemium sempervirens; Cross Vine, Bignonia capreolata; Climbing Aster, Aster carolinianus; Live Oak, Quercus virginiana; Redbud,Cercis canadensis; Sea Grape, Coccoloba uvifera; Silver and Green Buttonwood, Conocarpus erectus; Florida Red Cedar, Juniperus silicicola; Coco Plum, Chrysobalanus icaco; Bald Cypress, Taxodium distichum; Pond Cypress, Taxodium ascendens; Southern Slash Pine, Pinus elliottii densa; Carolina Cherry Laurel, Prunus caroliniana; Florida Maple, Acer barbatum; Loblolly Bay, Gordonia lasianthus; Florida Blackhaw Viburnum, Viburnum obovatum; many more.... Of course, not all live throughout Florida.
The problem is that Florida is addicted to the flashy imported plant materials. The imports are beautiful, doubtless, similar to the way prostitutes are beautiful compared to the simple natural beauty of a farmer's daughter.

When I lived there, I saw many of the following: hibiscus, frangipani (flowering tree), poinciana (flame treee), banyan (tree), poinsettia, many types of palm trees, palmetto (bush). There are many, many others. It is said that you can plant a broomstick there, and it will grow.
