Well I don't know about other people, but when I do that it's because it helps me to keep from getting distracted by everything else around me, because sometimes it's just hard to think! It's like an actor onstage (which I've been a couple of times in the past); they'll tell you to look at the lights or look at a spot in the back of the room rather than the audience because it'll help you concentrate better, and for me that's exactly what works, to focus on something simple so that I can concentrate on my thoughts better :)

*This question reminded me of one of the avatars that DW uses of Frank Sinatra looking up....I love that one :)

In most cases it's a reflex action when a question or moment arises that causes pause, reflection, or hits an emotional nerve.
It's a visual sign of seperation and disconnect from the person who asked the question.
It's an obvious sign of a person processing.

people look up,
but also favor looking toward the left or right
(lem..lateral eye movement)

looking "away", helps us stay focused on the question
by closing out distractions.
looking towards the left or right
depends on which side of the brain we are using
to answer the question.

if you need "right-brain thinking" you'd look...left.
if you need the left side of your brain to answer the question, you'd look towards the....right.
(tests indicate that if you PREVENT a person from averting their gaze, they have a harder time answering the question)

interestingly enough,
if you have a question that requires left-brain thinking
(trying to remember the spelling of a word, for example)
looking to the right, it helps you find the answer.

It's a reflex. Typically, when people look up, they open their mouths slightly, leading to a better inflow of air. Oxygen is essential for cognitive thinking.

Something to do with a lobe in your brain that you access to collect your thoughts. I've tried to look straight ahead while thinking, didn't work. That's one way you can tell if someone's lying too. If you ask them something and they look up, they're usually lying.

Hoping to get in touch with 'the lightbulb'?
And why do people knock themselves lightly on the head if they make a boo boo?

People do that when they are trying to look at their brains and see what's going on up there ..... i think..... at least that's why I do it ;-)

Its a reflex, means we are accessing our visual cortex. Can indicate lying too. Otherwords getting creative.

I wonder myself... I think it's stupid, but some people think they look more profound when they do this
