It goes far beyond the 39 pennants and 26 championships. In many seasons they have accumulated a great deal of talent, and often used it to best advantage. Since 1920 the Yankees have almost always been a team to watch out for, and usually the Yankees have avoided needing wholesale rebuilding. One exception was in the mid-1960s, when several aging players retired and there were not enough good backups to take their places, despite standouts like Mel Stottlemyre and, later, Thurman Munson. (Things were so bad that the Yankees finished in 10th place in 1966; they were the only team that was not a perennial doormat to finish that low.)

Starting with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, the Yankee legend of great players has grown. Nor did the Yankees buy all of them. Ruth was bought from the Red Sox, to be sure, and Roger Maris from Kansas City, but others, like Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle and Derek Jeter, were home-grown, so to speak. (Accusations of the Yankees buying the pennant came in the 1920's and the 1950's - when Kansas City was derided as a Yankee farm team - as well as today.)

One other stat comes to mind. Only the Yankees have won the pennant five consecutive years, and they did this twice (1949-1953 and 1960-1964). The first time, they also won all five World Series!

Love 'em or hate 'em (it was once remarked that rooting for the Yankees was like rooting for General Motors), the Yankees are indeed the greatest baseball team ever. And this from a Mets fan! (If you are talking about an individual team effort, I still plump for the 1969 Mets, because all 25 players made a big difference, but that is a different discussion.)

Greatest team ever isn't the right term. "Most successful" would be fair, but then you have to consider that they play in the biggest city in the U.S., always have the biggest payroll, have a huge media following as a result of the size of the city and the success they've had.

I'm not saying the Yankees aren't one of the most tradition-rich franchises, but they've always had an advantage.

"Greatest team ever" is relative to what you think makes a team great. The St. Louis Cardinals have 10 world championships in a city that barely cracks 1 million people, in a less popular area of the country, but the fact the Cardinals average around 3 million people in home attenance every season is amazing. They still make a pretty good amount of money for such a small market and St. Louis is without a doubt a baseball town.

New York has TWO baseball teams, TWO football teams, TWO hockey teams and a basketball team.

St. Louis has the Blues and Rams but if you listen to talk radio in STL, there's baseball talk all year long and often overshadows hockey and football seasons.

Greatest team ever belongs to the St. Louis Cardinals. Not the Yankees.

I know that this answer will probably recieve oodles of thumbs down, but Oh well, ask me if I care?

I think that the NY Yankees are the greatest team ever, not because of the pennants, not because of the world series championships, but because of the rich tradition to taking chances and the dedication of winning for their fans. Many will argue, and rightly so that they "purchase" championships. I agree, to a certain extent. The outragous salaries that some of these "celebrity" athletes recieve (and this includes all teams) are off the Richter scale in terms of magnitude. Conceiveably, me being an ordinary average person, can not even begin to comprehend 25,000,000 dollars A YEAR! But nonetheless. Getting back to answering your question....
The dedication to winning is what makes them the greatest.

Back in 1920 when the public trust in the sport of baseball was at an all time low due to the Black Sox Scandal, many were turning from America's pasttime, it wasn't until Harry Frazee made the BIGGEST mistake of his life and sold his biggest rival, the New York Yankees the man who would single handedly bring back people into the ball park. We all know him as Babe Ruth. Taking chances and Dedication to winning.

In 1934, a relatively unknown ball player for the San Francisco Seals tore the ligaments in his knee, which should have ended his career, but instead managed to capure a few scouts attention. The Cubs turned him down, and again, the Yankees, dedicated to winning, took a chance, and so cross country, from San Francisco to New York he traveled to become one of the greatest of all times, Joltin' Joe DiMaggio. Again, Taking chances and Dedication to winning.

(Not much different, it is, than the game of life)

I could go on and on, because there are, in my eyes, so many greats, so here is just a brief summary as to why I think and believe that the New York Yankees are the greatest team in sports.

They are considered the Greatest American Sports Team, not just Baseball, but sports Period in this country because of the Players they have had who litter the Hall of Fame and More importantly becaue of the 26 WS titles they own... The Only Team On planet that Rivals them in Dominance of a sport over an extended period of time is the English Soccer Team, Manchester United. Man U has 15 championships, and is probably the only team that rivals the Yankees in terms of Financial Wear with all, Manchester United might actually have MORE money than the Yankees. But thats why The Yankees are considered the Greatest American Sports Franchise... Money and Championships aquired.

The New York Yankees have won more World Series than any other Major League team. The Dodgers when they were located in Brooklyn for many years won only one World Series, in 1955, mainly due to the fact they were consistently defeated by the Yankees in the Fall Classic.

Do you mean best club? There have been many different Yankee teams, one for every year of the organization. They are considered the best organization by many people who know nothing about baseball because of how much they have won. Why have they won so much? Because they have enough money. If the Royals had as much money as the Yankees, many would consider the Royals to be the best club. It's all because of the money.

I hate to say it but they have more Championships then any other team by far! No team in any other major sport comes close either! Just as long as they don't win anymore I will be happy! I love the fact that they blow money like it's water and don't win the big one anymore! Keep spending it takes chemistry to win not superstars! Just look at the past few years!

The answer is one word, MONEY. The Yankees have always had the resources (cash) to put the best 25 players on the field in every season. Look it up! They spend the most money and buy the best team that money can buy and the best players always jump at the chance to play for them because they know the owner will always do what it takes to get the best team.

In a nutshell, the Yankees are the most successful because:

1) They play in a large metropolitan market with large revenue streams thus being able to outspend anyone for free agents / player retention due to the inequitable playing field in the business of baseball

2) Scouting and development. In their history, they have always had the one player that they go out and draft and sign that is the lynchpin for their sucesses (Jeter, Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, etc.)

3) Because George Steinbrenner will not have it any other way.
