Lord of the Rings, The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, I know Why the Caged Bird Sings, To Kill a Mockingbird, War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Dante's Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost, Crime and Punishment, Germinal, Thr Brothers Karamazov, Candide, Wuthering Heights, Gone With the Wind, Brave New World, 1984, Farenheit 451, any of Jane Austen or Charles Dicken's novels, Barchester Towers, Madame Bovary, The Red and the Black, The Stand, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, The Color Purple, Ben-Hur, Uncle Tom's Cabin, The Odyssey, etc. I could go on and on, but that should suffice for now.

I'm 18, by the way; these are some of my favorites :)

My niece loved The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - a long but apparently engrossing story and its received many awards and favourable reviews recently.

I think Labyrinth by Kate Mosse is also great - action packed and much more interesting, historically informed version of the Grail Legend than the Da Vinci Code.

I'd also suggest The Tales of the Otori series by Lian Hearn and any of the books of Patrick Gale.

Here are some books that I read at that age:

Green Rider by Kristen Britain

Lady of the Forest by Jennifer Roberson

Winds of Fate, Winds of Change, Winds of Fury by Mercedes Lackey

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

The Shepherd of the Hills by Harold Bell Wright

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

All of Jane Austen's books

I can't think of any more.

I love Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. It's really intense and is about growing out of friendships, figuring out how to be an adult in your family, finding out where you come from, figuring out what you're going to do with your life, etc.

And it's pretty "action" packed, so not too hard to get into!

There's really so much out there, you've just got to have some more conditions, ie: what do you like? non-fiction? fiction? fast paced? pensive? serious? funny? realistic? unrealistic? Any decent librarian can help or you can look online for a READERS ADVISORY - like "overbooked".
