He's a great team player. And he's playing for the Yankees. You're bound to get a ton of save opportunities.

Because he doesn't pitch that often, it's preserving his arm. He doesn't have the wear and tear that most pitchers accumulate over the years so he still has teh strength to throw 95+ mph. He also has a nasty pitch with that cut fastball. When you only see a pitcher for an inning or so, the at-bats aren't going to amount to anything because Rivera still decieves the hitters and when your the hitter and you don't know what the location is, your not sure where to look.

By doing that it keeps the hitters off-balanced. Even if the hitter do get the bat on the ball, because of the way the ball is rotating and the movement, the hitters don't get good wood on it, therefore they pop it up or ground out. A lot of hitters just guess what he's going to throw and hope for the best.

There is an old baseball axiom that says if a batter knows what pitch is coming, he stands a much better chance of hitting it. There is another that says if a pitcher keeps throwing the same pitch over and over, the batter will eventually hit it hard.

In Mariano's case, both of these are absolute crap.

He throws one pitch, one speed. He throws it over and over again. Everyone in the stadium knows what he's going to throw and the batter still has only slightly better than a 1 in 10 chance of getting a hit off of it. His cut fastball should go into the Hall of Fame on its own.

He does not blow guys away..has never been a big strikeout guy like Eric Gagne or Trevor Hoffman. He doesn't worry about guys making contact, because most of the time the ball isn't going to get past the infielders...

Mariano has been consistent because he doesn't have to worry about deceiving a batter or maintaining a broad arsenal of pitches. He is the ultimate "Here it is, try to hit it" pitcher.

Manny Rivera has had so much success because of two things:

1) He pitches for the New York Yankees. A team owned by a man (George Steinbrenner) who outright demands that his team wins and contends every year. Since he is the closer for that team and you figure that they are going to win at least 95 times per year, he is good for at least 40 saves per year.

2) He shows up and closes the door shut at when it matters the most in October during playoffs and World Series.

He has his best pitch which is the cutter. He is dedicated, and seems to pitch excellently under pressure. He is just the greatest closer ever. He really wants to be a Yankee. He has had success in the Yankees World Championship wins from 1996-2000. He is still one of the best to this day.

He has no fear!! When he first became the closer for the Yankees, he wasn't that good. He trained and his cut fastball got unhitable. Then that's why he is the greatest of all time. He had the determination and the b@//s do go out there every night and be money.

And will continue to have success because he is not consumed by worldly motivations. He truly loves baseball. Mariano is a humble, faithful man who is in it for the game.

an unhittible cut fastball, ice in his veins, and long time success during crunch time. this game will eat up alot of hotshot pitchers until the ninth with runners in scoring position with a 1 run lead in yankee stadium.. rivera usually wins. no wild pitches, no behind in counts., no blame to toss around when he dosent come through.he isnt as good as he use to be, ive watched him for 10 years... his cutter dosent drop as much and his fastball isnt as fast.. but he is still on top..

He is great and has great stuff, and has been on one of the best teams in the league his whole career. He gets more save chances than if he was on a bad team... but the Yanks are never bad! He does the job though, he's electric and a hall of famer. Good stuff+ good oppurtunity= HOF!

because he is the only closer in the majors that can pitch 2 innings and close the game out on a regular basis-he can do that because he doesnt usually have to do it back to back-its not often that he has to close a game only ahead by one run-there is usually a 2-3 run cushion
