I downloaded Ubuntu 6.10 to a 700 meg CD without problems. When I insert it, I get a small Ubuntu screen. Then it goes away, and Ubuntu doesn't boot up at all. I'm using Windows XP, with 1 GB Ram, and a 160 GB HDD. Help!

Try searching Ubuntu forums if this is a known issue. I don't use Ubuntu, I use Mandriva. Unless I have more information, I couldn't tell you. I also don't know the inner workings of Ubuntu.

It sounds like to me, you havent isntalled it, but are trying to. It could be a bad burn. Before you burn ANY distribution, you must first make sure the md5 matches to the iso that you downloaded. If you are using k3b, this is simple to do. Also, make sure you burning with DAO, and you check the box "verify written data". To sum up:

--make sure the md5 sum matches to what was downloaded
--make sure you are using DAO writing
--check "verify written data" in K3B.

These three things will prevent a bad burn.

It may depend on your processor. Make sure that you are using the right version of Ubuntu for your processor. If you have a 64-bit processor it may have some problems booting normal versions of ubuntu. Also, the file you downloaded could be corrupted. Try getting a free burned CD from a distributor such as https://shipit.ubuntu.com/ which has a lot of different options.

Stick with it. Ubuntu rocks!

Are you sure? Ubuntu takes a long time to boot into the Live CD environment.

Maybe your graphics chipset is not supported. Check the Ubuntu website to see if that's the case. (I doubt that's the problem, just throwing it out there.)
