How about what started the war? So many people think the war was over slavery when it was really started when the South wanted to leave the nation. I always like to start with a question to get people thinking so maybe you could start with " How much do you really know about the Civil War?"

I know this sounds far out, but I think Ghosts from the civil war is cool. Lots of books about ghosts from the civil war are out there.
However, if your teacher wants something specific on the civil war itself, how about picking one battlefield and discuss who fought there, how many died, who the leaders were etc.

I would suggest a comparison study of General Grant and General Lee and their different approaches to fighting the war--why did Grant's stratgy lead to victory, and Lee's lead to defeat?
