A fetal heartbeat is much faster than it's mothers. A fetal range can be any where from 110 - 160, while the mother's stays below 100. You can really hear the difference - sometimes when a midwife or doctor is trying to find the baby's heartbeat using the doppler, they find the mother's accidentally. There's no mistaking a fetal heartbeat for it's mothers! Then there's also the beat of the umbilical cord - it has it's own distinct beat as well.
