What makes me an American is that I was born here.

That's the only requirement (well, one can become a naturalized American, too).

It helps to believe in The Constitution of the United States of America -- especially the Bill of Rights.

Believing in any sort of god (contrary to one of the answers), or liking spectator sports (or eating at McDonald's) are all optional.

The Constitution specifically prohibits all such requirements.

I think an American is someone who believes in the nation no matter what. Even though the nation is in a war an American should never give up and hope for the best. Also an American attends public meetings to voice their opinion about a situation in their town or village that they don't agree with. And if an American does agree with the situation then he or she should voice their opinion too. Don't forget that an American always should vote.

For immigrants, it's having American patriotism and pride after coming here. Otherwise it's simply being born in America under atleast one American parent.

technically i think it has to do with either being born here or asking for permission to live here.

Do you believe in the American dream? if so, you're American.

Will you lay down your life in the for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? if so, you're an American.

Have you ever worried about politics, thought deeply on the true meaning of the constitution, and worried where our country might be going? if so, you're an American.
