I only want it to get the free over the air high def channels.. not the high def channels that directv supplies.

It depends on the model receiver. Some of the receivers at one time allowed you to use your OTA antenna without a subscription, where all the ones today have software to disable the OTA portion of the receiver when there is no subscription on the receiver.

They did this because customers would not pay their Directv bill and be shut off for Non-payment and would still be enjoying their HD local channels.

Directv and DISH Network figure that if they gave you a discount on the HDTV receiver and your not paying for their service, your not going to use their box to watch FREE local channels.

Besides that, as a dealer for DISH Network when customers have absolutly no Tv, it gives them an incetive to pay their bill

I know this is not your case about not paying the bill, but from a dealer stand point this is the reasoning behind it.
