pros- represent your state by recruiting/drafting good players to further increase your reputation as a coach/owner, get them to win for more fans and more people will come to the games and more money to make and spend on other goods for your team

cons- limited money to spend, so you gotta be wise on what you spend, gotta keep players happy or else they will want a trade or want to leave, spending most of your time for the team and not with family and other stuff thats fun other than owning and coaching

yep pretty much that and maybe more

The theory is that the team will attract people to the area, who will then pay money to eat at restaurants, stay at hotels, etc. This theory is coming under a lot of fire. More and more studies are showing that many of these fans would have come to the area anyway, to shop, see movies, got to attractions, etc. The economic benefit of having a pro sports team probably doesn't justify the outlay of public money.
