Like St. Brighid, Saint Nicholas was an absorbed pagan deity. Our modern version of this personage is an amalagation of many old personifications of a very old elf. Yes, elf. In ancient times, it was believed that an elf came and delivered gifts to those who left him porridge. Ahh...see the connection between the milk and cookie offerings left by generations of children? Indeed, the popular figure of Santa Claus actually owes more to the god Odin than he does the Christian saint called Nicholas. Take a look. Good old Saint Nick is a very germanic fellow.
Doubtful? He dresses in red, a colour symbolic of the Teutonic Alfs, or elves. He has one eye with which he can give knowledge with a single wink. He has a long white beard and hails from the ancient lands of the frozen north. The the twelve days of Yule are special to him. Nick is one of his many names. Do you see the similiarity? Keep looking and more will just smack you in the face. It doesn't matter if you are comparing him to Santa Claus, Father Christmas, whom ever. Look hard enough and you will see the pagan deity behind. As for how the Yule elf got mixed up in popular culture with this figure, it may be that it was easier to personify this as a single being. The Yule elf was not a single elf. This time of year was in many ways for the Germanic peoples what Samhain was to the Celtics, a time when magic went out into the world, freeing the dead to walk and elves, trolls, gnomes, et cetera were free to roam. The idea behind the offerings of porridge was it was invitation of friendship and goodwill, which is why it was rewarded by the elf leaving a gift for the hosts.

Santa Claus is a long standing 'mythological/legendry' character who first began with the stories of Saint Nicholas according to history. It is also possible that a number of great kings etc lent portions to the tale, however as the legend of Santa dates back so far it is hard to know for sure.
The truth is that Santa embodies all the good will and generosity we are supposed to feel towards others at Christmas. Santa is as real as you want him to be, and while you continue to enjoy Christmas and make it a special time for those around you, Santa will continue to be real!

Yes, he is real. St. Nicholas was a real person, a Catholic bishop known for his generosity as well as his faith. He was a good preacher, it is also said of him. He is honored every year on December 6.
Many stories have attached to him over the years, and they are not real, like the business at the North Pole and the sleigh full of toys and so on, but that Santa is real, too: he is all of us when we are being good and kind and generous. So when you help another person, you are Santa Claus, and you don't need a big belly and a white beard to do it.

Eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York's Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history's most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.
"DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
"Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?
"VIRGINIA O'HANLON.
"115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET."
VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest man that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank GOD! He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

This question is in the Mythology & Folklore section, so no.
I hate to be a downer, but you asked for it. There is no such thing as magic. You can't ride a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer over every house in America and drop packages into all the chimneys in one night.
Not everyone has a chimney.
Not every present is small enough to fit down a chimney.
And rich people get more presents than poor people.

simply, no. i doubt it. there is a chance but i bet if god wanted there to be a ever-living man giving toys to children, he would mention it somewhere in the bible...or something along the lines of "I made this guy named saint nick, and he will give you toys" and either way, if it is scientifically possible for santa to do whatever...you would think he wouldve got bored enough to walk around and be like WAZZAP IM SANTA! by now
