Is there some reason for this? Doesn't it seem like they're wasting money, by letting all that heat escape out the front door into the cold?

The heaters are trying to combat the cold that would otherwise come in...though costly, it keeps the store warm and shoppers willing to stay inside and give them money! :o)

it helps to keep some the cold air you just let in by opening the door

Perhaps it's to draw you further into their store so you will spend all of your money...it's a conspiracy! *wink*
