What are some pros and cons for a state to own and pay for a professional sports team?

With state or city ownership, the team is locked into a certain location. It won't move to another city at the whims of management. Also, any profits the team generates become public property, which might reduce taxes in the area.

Governments, however, have more important priorities than sports. They may not give as much attention to the team as a private owner would. Also, the government becomes responsible for any expenses and losses associated with the team. This could create a significant amount of debt.
