We have been together four and a half years, living together a portion of that time. We have marriage and even shopped for rings, I plan to ask her in the next six months or so. Want to do that in a special way but want her fathers blessing yet he lives in Florida and we are in TX. I have met him and been around him numerous times both here and there, no time in the near future will we probably be together in person though. How should I ask... What is the proper etequite??

Being a parent of a married daughter (whole husband asked us in person, by the way), most definitely ask in person. It will show the father that you think enough about his daughter that you would go through the extra effort to formally ask for her hand. If she has both parents, I suggest you ask both of them together. After all, she is her mother's daughter too even though by tradition only the father is asked.

Proper etequite says you should ask him face to face, it means more to ask such an important question when you can see facial expression, However, sometimes circumstance predicts something entirely different. If you aren't able to see him then call him, explain that you would prefer to be asking him in person but that you just aren't able to because of the fact you live in different states. tell him how much his daughter means to you and that you want to ask for her hand in marriage but won't do so without his permission. I'm sure he'll understand why it has to be done over the phone.

Definately in person.

If you make a point to go and see him, even if you live far away, it shows that you want to include her family in your lives, that you're not planning on just marrying her and not caring anything about those she cares about.

Doing it over the phone just seems lazy, and it doesn't always come off as nice. It can sometimes say "I'm only doing this because I think it's nice, but I'm going to do it whether I have your blessing or not"

I know that's not how it always is, but it can come off that way.

So again, in person is better because it shows you want her family included in whatever decisions you and she make.

Maybe you can contact her father over the phone and maybe within the six month range arrange a weekend or a week for like a family get together and if you are able to arrange that you could ask him in person I think that it would be nice. GOOD LUCK and CONGRATS!!!!!

usually IN PERSON, but since you live in another state, you better use THE PHONE. There's no sense into buying an airline ticket just to ask this simple question. Unless, you both want to take a short vacation to visit him. You can stop by Disney World in Orlando! good luck & congrats!

Be an adult and ask in person. That is the proper way. Calling them is the little boys way out. If your that young you do not need to get married.

In person, he will absolutely love it and be thrilled that you have asked him. I did it in person and my wife's parents were thrilled and couldn't believe I asked their permission, great way to start and get brownie points.....haha. Good luck with the marriage.

It would definitely be better to ask in person, and it will mean a lot more especially since you are traveling to ask.

If you are going to ask him it is best if you do so in person. Over the phone is simply "tacky".
