It sounds like something broke and caused a loss of hydraulic brake pressure. It could be a master cylinder or wheel cylinder or even a brake line. Anytime brake pressure is lost the red light will come on to alert you of a problem. You need to have it checked out soon as the brakes are probably not going to feel right. Drive carefully to a shop and have the brake system checked out.

You need to atleast have them checked just to be safe. Sounds like the anti-lock brakes activated when the car started sliding. But about the brake light, maybe the bulb blew out.

if you have a friend thats also a mechanic, run it by just to be sure nothings wrong. doens't necessarily have to be a personal friend either, just a good mechanic that can check the cars computer for free(some will try to rip you off and charge for turning a warning light off) anyway, Alot of the warning lights on pre-2000 cars have major issues with things like that, if you do something funky all of a sudden it might jar the sensor that detects brake problems and make the car think that there is something wrong when its really just a misplaced sensor. in my family we have a 97 toyo supra, 00 dodge van, and 01 toyo tacoma that all have lights on when multiple times weve brought it to our neighbors(mechanic) and they said nothngs wrong, turn the light off and about a day later it comes back on, we take it back, he says its prolly the sensor. doesn't hurt to check though, brakes aren't something that afford to just stop working after slowly(but unknowingly) breaking. best of luck!

What probably happened is you blew a brake hose. You will see fluid on the ground and or on the rim of the tire. Nothing to major, but might cost a few hundred if you need to take it to the mechanic.

Check your brake fluid...you might have blown a brake line if it is still doing it...
If the orange ABS light is on, it is a problem with your anti-lock brake system. If the red BRAKE light is on, it is your basic brake system...if it is red, get it checked ASAP.

Check your level of brake fluid you are probably running low. Also make sure your parking brake is not on.

It sounds like you have a hydraulic leak. Get them checked before you drive the car. You can test it to see if they work and maybe limp to a service station but be careful.
If you just had them fixed call the shop that did the work. They should pick up and repair your car for no charge.

Check the brake fluid under the hood. The owner's manual should tell you where to look.
