I heard that if you have airconditioning on, your can will get better mileage?

Why?

isn't more energy used to operate the AC? makes no sence.

AC will use less fuel than having all your windows open at HIGHWAY speeds because of all the aerodynamic drag created by having the windows open. That's the truth.

Any other time, the AC is going to use more fuel. And you will use less fuel with the AC off and windows up on the highway of course.

Running the AC could be more fuel efficient than opening the windows. But there is no way that running the AC is more fuel efficient than windows closed. It takes energy to run the AC, and that energy comes from the engine. This is energy that does not go to moving the car.
