The sticky substance is actually a surfactant that aids collection of particulate especially fine dust that would foul your air sensing equipment. Actually a slight build-up on the media makes it more efficient as the paper is not an absolute sieve. Use pneumatic air from the clean air side of the filter towards the dirty side carefully so as not to damage the filter. Using solvent and reapplying 'the oily' stuff sounds intriguing but if not the right material or overapplying may allow the oil to travel downstream to damage mass air flow sensor. Replacing that is much more than buying a new filter. Buy a new filter is my recommendation if blowing out does not help.

If it is a foam air cleaner then use warm soapy water to clean it. You should dunk it in the soapy water and swish it around until you see it is getting clean. then dump the water and do it again. To rinse it, use warm water from the tap at low speed and rinse in the reverse direction of flow, so run the water the opposite way the air goes into the engine. Let it dry and then use oil to "recharge" the filter. I didn't say this at first but Get the K&N cleaning kit it comes with soap and the oil you need. If it is a not a FOAM filter then Go find another one like yours and read the instructions on the box on how to clean it.

You said it was a generic reusable. The K&N cleaner should work. I just checked my bottle of it and it said it is formulated for K&N but i would think it should work. I like their line of products...works great in my 99 Monte and my 01 Malibu. It's a 2 in 1 box deal. You get the cleaner and also a lubrication spritzer. If you want to be sure something will work, I'd try going to Auto Zone or Pep Boys for a look at something that's made by the company that made your filter. If you can't find anything, but don't think the K&N stuff will work, I'd suggest getting a paper one or a K&N.

Depends what brand it is. Some air filters are reusable. If you've had it in for more than a year and it is not a re-usable one, you're better off getting a new one.

I agree with most the other guys. Use an air compressor and blow opposite from the path of airflow when in use. Some guy said to only use a kit, that's why kits are sold. Some things are just sold because people will buy them. Try blowing it out first, it's a lot cheaper. If it still looks pretty rough then try the kit.

do no longer use a rigidity washer or an air gun, it truly is only ridiculous. gas is okay, yet kerosene is extra useful. also detergent on my own will do no longer some thing. you should sparkling with gas or kerosene first and then persist with with a dish washing detergent. save in recommendations, in case you haven't got clear out oil to placed on it after cleansing you're extra useful off leaving it dirty. I in reality aspect out this because it appears like you do not quite have the belongings you want to attempt this good.

NEVER reuse an air filter. Always purchase a new. Cleaning air filters damages it.

The guys talking about the K&N filters are right. If it is a paper cartridge filter then just get a new one.

if it's the oiled K&N type (or knockoff) go to autozone and get a K&N recharger kit, which comes with new oil and clear stuff. One of the ways to tell if it's the oiled type (and if it's aftermarket it's highly likely it is) is to just touch it and see if nasty greasy stuff gets on your hands.
