when i try and reboot, it will go through the normal process, show the windows xp screen, then the screen goes black and it shuts down and starts to process over. I tried to reload windows xp but it will not take, it just keeps going through the same process over and over, shuts down and starts over. I tried going to last known good configuration, but nothing works.

To re-install windows XP, you need to enter the BIOS setup and change your boot sequence ( by default it is: 1 -Floppy 2 -Hard drive 3 -CD-Rom drive ) .

You have to move CD-Rom drive up to position one, then the you will be able to re-install windows.

If you still have problem to complete the installation, then I am sure at 90% that your problem is the memory.

Good luck

Something caused a similar issue in mine not long ago. Mine's a hybrid -self put together several years ago. After several tries and no-go, I finally re-formatted the HD, and then reinstalled the OS (WinXP). It starts fine now, and there's no RAM, drive, or motherboard problems. I believe something was corrupted in the registry. If you cannot even get Windows to startup, there's no way to run System Restore. But reinstalling did clean out a lot of junk and programs that had accumulated which I rarely used. So it was an excuse to "clean house"! I also keep all my data and personal stuff on a second HD by default, in case of just such a situation. Didn't lose anything!

hey i got the same problem, the pc starts and the windows loading screen starts(the one at the bigging that say windows XP the loading bar) then it restart again and again but never starts all the way. i tried reintalling the program like you did, since the pc uses almost the same hardware(HDD, MEMMORY. ETC) i have in my other pc, i tried the hard drive, the memmory, the battery, and disc drive and everything seem to work with my workable pc but not with the one i am trying to fix. in conclusion i believe the motherboard is the problem.

If you have some general knowledge of computer repair, but are not sure of how to fix this problem, just call in a tech, have them look at the computer and tell you what's wrong with it. If you understand what they are saying tell them thanks for the info and let them go, then correct the problem yourself. It may be a lot cheaper than getting a new one, if you can solve the initial problem, because as long as the computer still comes on it can be saved.

Good Luck!!

Gonna need more info than just that! Like make modele, what did you do just before it did thiat? TRUTHFULLY NOW!! HA HA Drop it? hit it? install new software? Have you tried booting in safe mode? if it's a dell, and it's less that 2 years old, and there's NOTHING you want to save restart it and hit either F9 or F10 or F11 while holding the control (Ctrl) button.it will reboot to when you first got it.

i had this similar problem and a good frn whos good in comps suspects its hardware problem.. same for you if you meant you never even got to the desktop part.. and if its as if someone pulled the power cord out even before you get to reach your windows desktop

to troubleshoot which is the exact part, disconnect the components (HDD, CD Rom Drive) from your motherboard and start up and see if u get the same problem, plugging in one by one each component and starting up.. the moment the problem occur upon pluggin in that component then thats probably the faulty hardware

double confirm your suspicion if possible by obtaining a 2nd known working component eg if its the graphics card, borrow a graphics card from a your brother's PC (that is known to be working fine) and load it into your comp. if nothing happens then viola u got your faulty hardware..

I have had a similar problem on my computer as well as helped a friend on his. The first thing i would try is test your ram. If your ram card does not work, then as soon as xp tries to use it, it will crash. If I had to guess, I would say this is the most likely problem.

I think the only solution is to format the hard drive and then installing Windows XP. If you'd like to take backup of your hard drive you can install it into some other system and then copy it.

Did you try booting into safe mode? Hold down F8 when you get the splash screen and try safe mode and reload your registry.
