If you have working USB ports on your computers, you could try a USB floppy drive. Many mail order companies, Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA all carry them.
Better yet, get a USB flash drive. They hold more, are solid state, and can fit in a pocket. You can get them at the same places mentioned above.

well, in answer to why it is so hard, its because floppy disks are becoming/have become obsolete. When I bought my old laptop, only 2 years ago, I decided I needed a floppy drive to save papers and other documents on. (This was a High school graduation present for college) This past summer, I bought another laptop, without a floppy drive. I never even used the floppy drive on my old computer. These days, you can buy a 1 Gigabyte flash drive for next to nothing. Thats about 1000 times more data storage.
If you need to get an external floppy drive, you could try looking on amazon.com, or newegg.com. You may need to find an internal floppy drive and an enclosure for it to make it external.

Floppy drives are slowly becoming extinct. I'm surprised you can't find an external one. Probably because there's better alternatives. If her computers at school have a USB port. Just get her a little USB Flash Drive. They're like $15. She can slid it in the USB at school, save her projects. Then bring it home and stick in the USB and have it. It's like a mini hard drive that fits on the keychain. It holds a heck of a lot more than a floppy and you should be able to find it at any computer or office store.

Apparently you bought a computer that is missing a hard drive. This is somewhat common practice when giving away or selling a computer, in order to prevent identity theft and other fraud. The seller should have warned you, though. You're going to need to go out and buy a copy of windows and a new hard drive. There are two kinds, 3.5 inch for Desktops and 2.5 inch for Laptops. However, you're running fairly old technology there. That particular model was designed for Windows 98, which you cannot obtain a license for (therefore you cannot purchase a disk.) I'm not sure that you would be able to put in a new hard drive with reasonable effort because they were not incorporated into the design as being relatively easy to swap until fairly recently. The same is true for the memory. If you're lucky, you'll find panels on the bottom of your laptop that you can unscrew, then lift, in order to expose certain components such as the memory or hard drive. You may as well resell it on ebay (telling the buyers it lacks a hard drive), keep it for a museum in 50 years, or recycle it and get a more modern laptop running windows XP or Vista used, in my opinion. :) Hope this helps, --John

If you want something easier than a floppy drive and more convenient, faster, smaller, and with tons more space, get a USB drive. they're also called thumb drives, pen drives, flash drive , it's all the same. They fairly cheap and hold a lot more than a floppy. they are smaller than a floppy, faster, and don't need to install anything in the computer.

Because floppy drive, unfortunately, are a very obsolete technology, and are becoming harder to find. I recommend you buy your daughter something called a USB flash drive. It's just like a floppy disk, but it holds muh more space.

Hello there, actually the 3.5inch Floppy Drive used to be the state of the art medium for copying, transfering and sharing files. It is now becoming obsolete because there are better technologies which are more robust and more state of the art because they are ultra portable, more reliable and have greater capacity what I'm talking about are USB drives. They come in many shapes, names and sizes.Major players such as Kingston and Apacer have variety of USB Drives which can cater to your daughters needs. Try surfing the net for USB drive to get better understanding. Good Luck!

Floppy disk are obsolete, you can store 1.44 mb of info on it.
I will suggest you you to use the so call usb thumb disk, you can find some cheap one which can store up to 2000 mb of info at almost the same price and they are way more secure than the old floppy disk.
When you get used this technology you will see that floppy disk is a mistake.
here is one for example, copy and this to the address bar of your browser:

as technology advances, the use of floppy disks are becoming like the old records, they dont hold much data and are easily messed up.
depending on where you are though, any computer store should be able to get a external floppy drive for you, i know here best buy and circuit city carry them.
