Easy. When you're online with, let's say Limewire, you set up a user id. Let's say you have every Elvis song ever recorded on your hard drive. I get online, search for Elvis tunes, and your user id shows up listing all the songs you're sharing. BINGO!! Gotcha!!

They can then find your I.P. address by pinging you, and tracing your ISP

That is one of the reasons I don't download music!

Well what happens is the 'Internet Police' as they have become known as. Have quite a long list of I.P(Internet Protocol, Its like a phone number to your computer.. Simply put.) addresses. They choose one at random find the address to where you live. Take your computer, search it and if any illegal material is found. You either get thrown in jail for an amount of time or a massive fine (Up to 250,000 I think)

Another way they can do it is for the 'Internet Police' to Email or Call you over the phone and tell you to delete you Illegal movies and Music (And pr0n ;)) and they will check for it in a few days or weeks. That actually happened to my friend.

But getting caught with music is very rare. If you download movies the chance of being caught is actually very high. Even higher for games.

i believe they track some songs and the longer it takes to download the more of a chance there is for them catching you...that is why people get busted for downloading movies, because they take so long

Every computer on line has an IP address. The internet police happen to pick out yours as you are downloading music from .. say .. Limewire .. and you are caught and thrown in jail for 5 years and pay $25,000. Or, .. whatever. Good Luck ! :) PS .. Consider yourself busted !

They subpoena your isp for records of the ip addresses which have connected to a source of illegal music and they can see what you downloaded.

i got nailed when i was in college. record companies, ie sony, hire private companies to log into networks, ie college campuses, and search for shared files with large amounts of files or computers that are using a lot of bandwidth. if they find files, they can fine your or have you kicked off of the network, which is what happened to me. i had to write a letter of apology to sony and say i would delete all of the files in order to get back onto the network at school.

they can actually trace the ip address of your computer..
if you're not using a proxy server, it's easier for them to trace the downloads to you.
