I am a wedding planner, so I always tell my clients that it depends on the time of year for the wedding. Before jumping right to the dresses, try to think of a good color scheme for the whole event, first. Do you want a neutral pallette? Or a bold color and some complementing colors? Here are some color combinations (arranged by season) from past weddings I have coordinated:
springtime wedding: sky blue, grass green, pale yellow, cream
summer wedding: light aqua, bright red, white
fall wedding: burnt orange, champagne/tan, chocolate, cream
winter wedding: deep red, champagne, cream
After you decide on a pallette, THEN choose which of those colors works best for a dress color. Just as important as the color is the style of dress. Choose something simple that the bridesmaids can wear again, and if you like, let each bridesmaid pick out her own dress from three or four you have picked out (as long as they are all the same color). You want the bridesmaids to feel comfortable in the color and style selection, and you want something in their budget.
Best wishes!

Any colors will work for any time of year. Your Maid and Matron of Honor can be in the same colors as your other bridesmaids, or they can be in another shade of the same color, or another color entirely. Your call. Talk to your fiance and see what kind of colors he likes. Go shopping with your bridesmaids and see what colors look nice on them, and what they like. If you have not yet selected your wedding colors, you could build them off of what the bridesmaids vote for. When in doubt, use black and white. Simple, classic, easy to find and easy to match. Don't worry too much about wedding colors. The only place we used them was in the invitations and the bridal party members' attire. The florist helped me choose complementing flowers to use in the bouquets and centerpieces. We used the reception hall's standard white tablecloths, and neutral napkins. Done and done. It's so easy if you don't stress over it.

If I were you, I would pick pink or a dark red. It depends on what color the setting of your wedding is.
