it'll just break down the fibers of the fabric.

Thermal skivvies work because they're able to stay close to your skin and use your own body heat as a heater to keep you warm. If the fibers break down, it won't be close to your body. If it's not close to your body, it won't keep you warm. If you're not warm you may be shivering out of control and disoriented and walk into traffic, thereby injuring yourself or dying.

Thus, yes, it may kill you if you use fabric softener on you undies.

the material polypropylene is only effective when the pores are open to wick water away, dryer sheets have a waxy substance that clogs those pores. I don't think you'll need to use them, the material keeps a smooth feeling for quite some time. Use perfume to smell good, but I don't usually put smell good on my briefs.
