1. bacteria on your skin and in your gut (the good bacteria) help prevent colonization by bad bacteria just by taking up space
2. bacteria are used in biotechnology , you can insert a gene into them and have them make stuff for you (like insulin)
3. Bacteria are found in the rumen of cows, goats, ect. They ferment the cows food and provide the cow with energy and protien.
4. Bacteria of your gut produce vitamin K which is needed for blood clotting
5. Some bacteria are being looked at for a process known as bioremediation. Some bacteria naturally breakdown toxic substances, and these are looked at as a way to clean up pollution.
6. Some bacteria such as Lactobacillus are used in making yougert
well i can't think of anymore, other people will probally give you the rest.

I'm not sure what all the fascination with the gravel is about. In reality, the majority of the bacteria you are talking about, the nitrifying bacteria, lives in your filter, not your gravel. There is a small amount of bacteria that does live in the gravel, but well over 90% of that is in your filter, so the real question here is did you do anything to your filter? Cycle does nothing. Cycle claims to have dormant bacteria in a bottle. The reason why Cycle is a bottle of crap is in order for bacteria to survive in a bottle like that, you'd have to have a constant source of ammonia, which it doesn't and a constant supply of oxygen, which it doesn't. Even that refridgerated stuff Bio Spira is very iffy at that. Too many inconsistant results I've seen about that junk. Don't stress your gravel too much. If there is something to worry about out of all this, is hoping your water chemistry isn't too vastly different then the old tank. Plus, setting up a new tank, the water temp might need some time to adjust. But this is all about your fish, not the nitrogen cycle. As long as you don't go more then maybe half a day without that filter running, you should be just fine. If you are going to buy anything to make sure, then get Prime. This can serve you as a de-chlorinator, but will also, in the event you lost enough bacteria to cause a small spike in your readings, ionize ammonia as well as nitrites. Jack, they are snowballing you. Bacteria does NOT function that way. I got bunged up into that Cycle too when I first tried it and I was in no way impressed. It is not possible for that bacteria to be dormant, I'm sorry to say. I'll call a few others in on this one.

Bacteria are part of your normal flora, in your digestive system
Beneficial Bacteria
Harmless and beneficial bacteria far outnumber harmful varieties. Because they are capable of producing so many enzymes necessary for the building up and breaking down of organic compounds, bacteria are employed extensively by humans—for soil enrichment with leguminous crops (see nitrogen cycle), for preservation by pickling, for fermentation (as in the manufacture of alcoholic beverages, vinegar, and certain cheeses), for decomposition of organic wastes (in septic tanks, in some sewage disposal plants, and in agriculture for soil enrichment) and toxic wastes, and for curing tobacco, retting flax, and many other specialized processes. Bacteria frequently make good objects for genetic study: large populations grown in a short period of time facilitate detection of mutations, or rare variations.
