I've had cats that will go off to a room by themselves and meow in a sad tone until you come to console them. One time was when I had two cats who were very very close and one passed away. My other cat couldn't understand why her buddy never came home from the vet. Sometimes a cat will kind of mope around and won't play or do much of anything for a few days if they're depressed.

When I had my dog he showed his emotions. Like the time when he broke one of his favorite toys, his tail went pointing down to the floor, and gave me a sad look in his eyes.

Its usually the way they act, how they carry their body, our dog will hide under her blankie, when shes been scolded, and wag her tail when shes pleased to see someone, and practically smile when shes happy,or being held and loved. When she is sad, which is seldom, she just prefers to sleep. She figures when she wakes up things will be different and her owners will be back home any minute!!!!
A cat is a whole different animal, they prefer to just sleep thru it all! lol.....purring when contented, swishing their tail when they are agitated sometimes.

I have seen animals 'wimper' and put their tales
between their legs, when they are frightened,
abused or unsure of their surroundngs, When I
leave my home to go somewhere, my little pet
poodle actually 'howls' in discontent, birds will
stop singing, and hamsters will go to one corner
of their cages, I wish some people would come to
realize that animals do have 'emotions' (:

Dogs whine and tuck their tails between their legs, and skulk around. In both cats and dogs, not eating, restlessness, and lethargic behavior with little activity are most likely depression.
