It very much depends upon where you are resident, what nationality you are. British and Commonwealth nationals can obtain a 30 day entry stamp and I believe so can the citizens of the US. ASEAN nationals can stay for a longer period but there is a group of nationals who require a visa before entry to Singapore.
I believe the requirements for Malaysia are more or less the same, but UK visitors do not need a visa and can stay for 90 days with an entry stamp on arrival.
